Creating a new Revit file involves several key steps, including selecting the correct template, configuring project settings, and saving the file properly. A well-prepared Revit file allows for seamless collaboration, accurate documentation, and efficient model development.
Why Proper File Setup is Important

Once the initial setup is complete, you can proceed with modeling, adding elements, and refining your design. Proper preparation ensures that your project progresses smoothly from concept to construction.
Create a project file from a template
Step 1: Launch Revit & Create a New Project
- Open Autodesk Revit 2025.
- Click New → Select Architectural Template (or use a company-standard template).
- Click OK to start the project.
✅ Tip: If your company has a custom template, use it to maintain consistency in settings, families, and styles.
Step 2: Set Project Units
- Go to Manage Tab → Project Units.
- Select the appropriate measurement system:
- Metric (millimeters, meters)
- Imperial (feet, inches)
- Adjust precision for length, area, volume, angles, and slopes.
- Click OK to apply changes.
✅ Tip: Keep unit precision practical (e.g., avoid excessive decimal places) to maintain clarity in dimensions.
Step 3: Save & Backup the File
- Click File → Save As → Choose a directory.
- Name the file following a structured format:

ProjectName_Version_Date.rvt

- Enable Auto-Save and set Backup Frequency (File Options → Save Reminder).
